What the Brewers Association’s latest on-premise data tells us about the future of beverage branding, tap handles, and POS marketing.
There’s a line in a recent Brewers Association industry analysis that every brewery, beverage brand, and distributor should probably read twice:
“Winning in on-premise is less about getting into more places, and more about performing once you’re there.”
That’s the entire game right now.
Not more accounts.
Not more SKUs.
Not more noise.
Performance.
And if you really think about what’s happening inside bars, restaurants, stadiums, neighborhood pubs, taprooms, music venues, and sports bars across America… it makes perfect sense.
The beverage world has officially entered the attention economy.

The Tap Wall Is More Competitive Than Ever
According to the Brewers Association’s recent analysis, draft still matters enormously for craft beer. Craft continues to significantly over-index on draft compared to overall beer sales, with roughly 80% of craft beer sold on draft at bars over the past decade.
That’s huge. Because while many consumers discover brands online or in retail, on-premise still creates:
- trial
- brand loyalty
- social proof
- impulse purchasing
- repeat orders
But there’s a problem. Most tap walls are visually chaotic. Walk into almost any busy sports bar or neighborhood pub and you’ll see:
- 20–60 taps competing simultaneously
- canned cocktail signage
- TVs everywhere
- overloaded coolers
- bright back bars
- rotating seasonal offerings
- distracted consumers making split-second decisions
In that environment, “good enough” branding disappears. Visibility wins.

The Drinking Places Growing Aren’t Necessarily Craft-Centric
One of the more interesting findings from the Brewers Association report is that neighborhood bars and sports bars are growing, while premium bars and nightlife-focused concepts are declining.
That matters more than people realize. Why? Because many of the accounts growing today are:
- faster paced
- higher volume
- less curated
- more impulse-driven
Consumers aren’t standing there carefully analyzing tasting notes. They’re scanning quickly.Which means beverage brands now have only a few seconds to:
- get noticed
- communicate identity
- create curiosity
- look credible
- feel memorable
That’s where tap handles and POS suddenly become much more than decoration. They become sales tools.
Your Tap Handle Is Basically a Billboard
A custom tap handle does something digital advertising cannot:
It intercepts a consumer at the exact moment they’re making a purchase decision. That’s incredibly valuable. The strongest-performing beverage brands understand this. The best tap handles today are designed to:
- stand taller
- create silhouette recognition
- improve readability from a distance
- reinforce brand colors
- increase perceived quality
- visually interrupt crowded tap lines
And increasingly, the smartest brands are pairing tap handles with full POS systems:
- embossed tin tackers
- illuminated signs
- retail displays
- case stackers
- pole toppers
- branded chalkboards
- menu callouts
Because cohesive branding performs better. Period.
Consumers Are Still Making Split-Second Decisions
One thing the Brewers Association data reinforces is that the on-premise pie is relatively stable — not dramatically expanding. That means brands are fighting harder for the same moments of consumer attention. And attention is finite.
Consumers today are making beverage decisions faster than ever:
- while watching sports
- during conversations
- in loud environments
- while scanning crowded coolers
- while multitasking socially
This is exactly why visibility-focused branding is becoming more important across:
- craft beer
- RTDs
- THC beverages
- hard teas
- NA beverages
- cider
- canned cocktails
- premium coffee on tap
The brands investing in physical visibility are creating an advantage that many competitors still underestimate.
The Rise of “Silent Selling”
The strongest POS doesn’t scream. It guides. Great beverage branding works like a silent salesperson:
- drawing the eye naturally
- reinforcing credibility
- simplifying decisions
- increasing recall later
That’s why sculpted tap handles continue to matter. That’s why illuminated signage works. That’s why strong retail displays increase velocity. And that’s why distributors and retailers often support brands that invest in stronger merchandising systems. Because visible brands tend to move.
The Future of On-Premise Will Belong to Memorable Brands
The Brewers Association report makes one thing very clear:
Bars still matter. Draft still matters. Craft still matters. But simply being present is no longer enough. The brands winning today are the ones creating:
- stronger visual identity
- stronger recall
- stronger in-market presence
- stronger consumer recognition
In crowded drinking places, visibility is no longer optional. It’s strategy. And increasingly, the brands investing in that strategy early are the ones consumers remember when it’s time to order another round. Email sales@custombeerhandles.com to start your next tap handle or POS project today.
